Visualizing Data Stories for Climate Change and Health using Flourish: A Hands-On Workshop
MUST APPLY TO ATTEND
Date & Time: TUE, MAR 19th, 1 – 4 pm ET
Location (In-Person): BU Center for Computing & Data Sciences, 665 Commonwealth Ave, Room 1101.
(Please use elevators by Saxby’s Café to access the upper floors.)
Speaker: Heather Clifford, PhD, Chief Data Scientist at Visualizing Energy.
Event Description: Engaging data visualizations are a powerful tool for increasing the interpretability and impact of research. With new software constantly being developed, finding the software that is right for your data can be a challenge. Flourish is a software that can be used to quickly generate appealing, interactive data visualizations.
Visit the Institute for Global Sustainability’s Visualizing Energy project for examples of Flourish data stories in action.
The Boston University Center for Climate Health, Institute for Global Sustainability, Hariri Institute for Computing and Computational Science and Engineering, Initiative on Cities, and Research Computing Services are welcoming applications to a hands-on tutorial and working session focused on data visualization through Flourish, a platform that has been used by media organizations and researchers to produce engaging data stories. The goal is for participants to leave with a complete draft of a useful visualization product. Invited speakers will also discuss data visualization strategies for engaging the public, e.g. through the media or other communication avenues.
This workshop is supported by a Focused Research Program grant from the Hariri Institute, with additional support from the BU Initiative on Cities.

Deadline to apply extended to Friday, March 1
Eligibility: Graduate students and research staff who are working in the areas of climate change and health are encouraged to apply. Knowledge of data preparation and manipulation are necessary, but no prior familiarity with the Flourish software is needed.
What to bring: Attendees are expected to bring a dataset that is already aggregated or summarized to the desired output and ready for visualization. Flourish is not a data processing tool, and data manipulation in your own desired software program may be required prior to use of this tool. Data summaries will need to be uploaded to Flourish so do not include data that is confidential.
