Lei Tian Receives 2025 University Provost’s Scholar-Teacher of the Year Award

Hariri Institute Faculty Affiliate Lei Tian (ENG)

Lei Tian, associate professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, a Hariri Institute Faculty Affiliate, and a CISE Faculty Affiliate, was awarded the 2025 Boston University Provost’s Scholar-Teacher of the Year Award.

In an announcement from Dr. Gloria Waters, University Provost and Chief Academic Officer, the award “recognizes outstanding scholars who excel as teachers inside and outside the classroom and who contribute to the art and science of teaching and learning. The embrace of this dual role – scholar and teacher – is at the heart of Boston University’s mission.”

Tian has previously won the Hariri Research Incubation award as well as the College of Engineering’s Early Career Excellence in Research award. He has also been the recipient of an NSF CAREER award and a Chan Zuckerberg Initiative award.

Tian’s research focuses on Computational Imaging, which is a new optical imaging design paradigm that emphasizes tight integration between physical optics and algorithms. Specifically, his Ph.D. work develops “compressive imagers” for 3D (holographic and tomographic) systems using wave optics. His current research focuses on Computational Microscopy, which uses patterned illumination and nonlinear optimization to enable gigapixel imaging capability for high throughput biomedical applications.

“By developing curricula that incorporate the latest scientific advancements, applying novel teaching techniques, and encouraging a diversity of perspectives,” Dr. Waters noted, “Professor Tian aims to not only produce skilled engineers, but inspire lifelong learners and innovators who contribute meaningfully to society.”
