ENG Robotics Programs Listed Among Nation’s Best
Boston University makes the short list of top Robotics Universities, according to Analytics Insight. The Robotics Lab at Boston University’s college of engineering offers three distinct research topics to impart the knowledge of how to program and create robotic automation among its students. Boston University Robotics Lab is a self-contained research facility situated in the Engineering Product Innovation Center (EPIC) on Boston University’s Charles River campus.
ENG Researchers Win $1.5M Department of Energy Grant
Three ENG researchers, Assistant Professor Mary Dunlop, Assistant Professor Wilson Wong, and Professor Ji-Xin Cheng, were awarded a three-year, $1.5M Department of Energy grant to develop technology to better understand and measure the synthesis of biofuels in living cells.

Researchers Win NSF Grant to Advance Study of the Cocktail Party Effect
Two ENG professors have been awarded nearly $1 million from the National Science Foundation (NSF) as part of the Brain Research through Advancing Innovative Neurotechnologies (BRAIN) initiative. Principal Investigator Associate Professor Kamal Sen (BME) and Co-Principal Investigator Associate Professor Xue Han (BME) will study the neural networks that allow the brain to distinguish sounds from each other.

Duan Wins DARPA Young Faculty Award
Duan’s award will help fund his research into replicating cell-to-cell communication. He is one of the 35 YFA awardees this year and will receive close to $500,000 from DARPA over the next two years to pursue his project and he could receive an additional $500,000 based on the progress of the project.
Shrinking Down Soft Robots
A novel four-step process has been developed by researchers including Assistant Professor Tommaso Ranzani (ME) and Assistant Professor Sheila Russo (ME) to construct microfluidic origami for reconfigurable pneumatic/hydraulic (MORPH) systems. Their work, published in Advanced Materials, details the process and demonstrates its capabilities with the fabrication of a highly complex soft structure.
Katherine Yanhang Zhang Named Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers
Only three percent of members become fellows and to be nominated and elected, a member must meet qualifications in at least one of nine categories; Zhang was chosen for her accomplishments in the research and education categories.
