Application Deadlines and Requirements

At the heart of the Boston University College of Engineering’s mission is preparing the world’s citizens to advance the global economy and quality of life for all people. We invite and sustain a vibrant national and international student population, and a deep appreciation of global and cultural awareness and respect is a critical component of an engineering degree.

In 2016, the Times Higher Education ranked the employability of BU graduates 11th compared to all universities in the world and 7th in the United States.

The Division of Systems Engineering (SE) is a unique interdisciplinary graduate program with an emphasis on cutting-edge research on analytical and computational methods, aiming to design and manage human-made and physical systems across a broad range of applications. Our faculty comes from different disciplines in engineering, arts & sciences, medicine and business, and collaborate closely with the Center for Information and Systems Engineering (CISE).

SE offers the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), Master of Science with thesis (MS), Master of Science non-thesis (MS), and Master of Engineering (MEng) degrees to graduate students and a minor to undergraduate students interested in information, decision and control sciences, and in all application areas encompassing the modeling, analysis, simulation, control, optimization and management of complex systems. The flexibility of the field and the need for systems engineers with advanced academic training in real, cross-domain environments mean ample job opportunities and a positive career outlook.

Faculty members from within the College of Engineering, along with affiliated faculty members from within the College of Engineering, as well as the College of Arts and Sciences, the School of Medicine and the Questrom School of Business, supervise dozens of PhD students working on projects funded by several federal agencies and private companies.

Research activities focus on:

  • Automation, Robotics, and Control
  • Communications and Networking
  • Computational Biology
  • Information Sciences
  • Production, Service, and Energy Systems

Master’s Degree Concentrations:

  • Computational and Systems Biology
  • Control Systems
  • Energy and Environmental Systems
  • Network Systems
  • Operations Research
  • Production and Service Systems
