Other ME Undergraduate Opportunities

Minors

Students can supplement their Mechanical Engineering degree by selecting a minor.

ME students can choose a minor field from 5 areas within Engineering. Completion of an engineering based minor requires students to take at least an additional 12 credit (equivalent of 3 courses) beyond the 135 required credits and for the ME bachelors degree.

Minors are also available in almost every discipline at the university such as:

  1. Sustainable Energy (Interdisciplinary with CAS, SMG, and ENG)
  2. Music
  3. Management
  4. History
  5. Biology, etc.

Each college sets its own requirement for minors. All minors will involve credits beyond the required 136 for the ME bachelors degree.  Students can usually count one or two of the required minor courses towards the fulfillment of their ME requirements.

Dual Degree

Students can earn two bachelor degrees from two different schools or colleges simultaneously.  A minimum of 144 credits is required and all of the program specific requirements for both programs must be met.  Students can apply to this program once they have achieved sophomore standing if they have at least a cumulative GPA of 3.0.

Double Majors

Students can earn two engineering bachelor degrees.  A minimum of 160 credits is required and all of the program specific requirements for both programs must be met.   Students can apply to this program once they have achieved sophomore standing if they have at least a cumulative GPA of 3.0.

Early Admission to MS Program

The Master’s in Science Program is designed to allow qualified students the opportunity to apply for early admission to the MS program and complete both degrees in 5 years or less depending upon the number of AP and/or college credits with which they enter the undergraduate program. Students can begin to apply to the program the Fall of their senior year.

Co-op, and Internships

Students can perform research with a faculty member at any point throughout their four years. Several specific programs target research opportunities. There is an additional option for students which provides for a longer co-op experience.

Study Abroad, Extracurricular Groups

Mechanical Engineering students can apply to participate in the College’s study abroad program.  The program has been designed so that students can continue to fulfill requirements for graduation while learning a foreign language and experiencing another culture.  The highlighted courses in the program planning sheet on the left show the courses that are regularly offered at the study abroad sites.  The program has been designed such that students will attend during the spring semester of their sophomore year and will not extend the time until graduation.

Mechanical Engineering is home to very rich and active student groups. Groups range from the BU Rocket Propulsion Group, to the Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Group, and our SAE teams (Baja and Formula Racing).
