TIME has named Distinguished Professor Xin Zhang’s (ME, ECE, BME, MSE) wireless MRI Coils to its list of the “Best Inventions of 2025.”
The wireless MRI coils attach to the body, weigh less than an AA battery, and cost only $50. The technology is making MRI’s more efficient and more accessible. One day they could allow “first responders using portable MRI to assess injuries on the spot, a scenario unthinkable just a decade ago,” said Zhang.
The technology was also recognized by Fast Company as a World-Changing Innovation and was awarded a Silver Medal as a Game Changing Innovation of the Year by the Global Good Awards.
This is the second year in a row technology developed by ENG faculty has made the TIME Best Inventions list: in 2024, Irving Bigio’s rapid skin cancer detection device was honored.
