Your next chapter starts here.
Maybe you’re coming straight from undergrad, ready to go deeper into communication and media before you enter the field. Maybe you’ve been working and realized you want more — more strategy, more expertise, more room to lead. Either way, you’re here because you want to do something significant in the communication. And you want a degree that actually gets you there.
That’s exactly what graduate school at Boston University’s College of Communication is for.
COM graduate students don’t just study communication — they practice it. From your first day, you’ll work alongside faculty who are actively shaping their industries, in a dynamic, historic, innovative city, at a university with a global alumni network in virtually every corner of the field.
Whatever brought you here, there’s a program designed for where you want to go.
Hands-on learning across every communication discipline
Our student-run agencies, AdLab and PRLab, put Advertising and PR students on actual campaigns with paying clients. Journalism students report for regional news outlets through BU Newsroom. Television and Screenwriting students write and produce work that gets seen. Media Ventures candidates pitch their business ideas to industry executives, not just professors.
And beyond the classroom, Boston delivers. As one of the top media markets in the country, the city is home to world-class agencies, newsrooms, studios, and startups, which means internship opportunities don’t require you to pack up and move. Get connected with prestigious firms locally, nationally, and internationally through your time in the program.
Study and live in one of America’s most vibrant student cities
Boston is more than a backdrop. It’s one of the most student-dense cities in the nation – walkable, historic, and alive with the kind of energy that makes graduate school feel like a leap forward, not a pause.
If you’re coming straight from undergrad, there’s a built-in community here and a sense that people around you are figuring out their next thing, too. Dozens of colleges and universities, an extraordinary range of cultural and social options, and a city that’s small enough to navigate but big enough to surprise you.
And if you’re joining us in one of our fully online programs, you’re part of our community, too – just from wherever you already are.
More than a degree
A COM degree is designed to be used, not filed away. Long before graduation, you’ll be building experience, expanding your professional network, and developing a portfolio that reflects real work, not just coursework. That’s by design. Our faculty are industry leaders, researchers, journalists, filmmakers, strategists, and entrepreneurs who teach the way the field actually operates, because they’re still part of it.
Communication in the age of AI
You’ll explore emerging technologies while developing the skills organizations need most: leadership, critical thinking, audience understanding, and the ability to turn complexity into clarity. Platforms, technologies, and workflows will continue to evolve. Strong communicators know how to adapt.
I believe this program has given me all the tools to follow my dream, my passion as a researcher and, most importantly, as a business owner. I have a vision with my company, and my clients have a vision to take their companies to the next level. The sky is the limit!
