First-Generation Association.

Our Mission

Our mission at The FGA @ BUSPH is to support first-generation students to succeed in graduate school and beyond. The FGA @ BUSPH pulls from BUSPH’s definition: a first-generation graduate student is “the first in their family to pursue an advanced degree” (MPH, MS, DrPH, PhD). We are dedicated to creating a nurturing and inclusive community that champions the unique strengths and resilience of first-generation scholars.

We aim to provide unwavering support, resources, mentorship, and advocacy, complementary to what is offered by the Newbury Center and BUSPH, to ensure that our members excel academically, personally and professionally. We aim to target the first-generation graduate community at BUSPH, but will also welcome any others who identify with the same struggles and pain points as first-generation students. Our commitment to equity and inclusivity drives us to break down barriers, challenge disparities, and foster a culture of belonging within the BUSPH community. We believe that support for first-generation students not only enriches their lives but also the broader BUSPH academic community.

As the First-Generation Association at BUSPH, we celebrate the stories and successes of first-generation graduate students, turning obstacles into opportunities and dreams into achievements. Our mission is to empower, uplift, and unite, ensuring that no first-generation scholar ever walks their journey alone.
