Pardee School Welcomes 3 New Faculty Members
The Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University is pleased to welcome three new incoming faculty members — Jonathan Greenacre, Assistant Professor of International Relations; Andrei Mamolea, Assistant Professor of International Relations; and Mark C. Storella, Professor of the Practice of Diplomacy.
Jonathan Greenacre is a scholar and lawyer. Before academia, he practiced law in a commercial law firm. He has provided legal and regulatory advice to the United Nations, International Monetary Fund, World Bank, and central banks in Africa and the Pacific. He focuses on developing new regulatory frameworks for the digital revolution, particularly fintech payment systems/cryptocurrencies, artificial intelligence, transportation, and the internet of things. Greenacre will join the Pardee School faculty in July of 2021.
“I am honored and delighted to join BU’s Pardee School,” said Greenacre. “I look forward to engaging with world-class Pardee students and faculty on important technological changes sweeping the globe. Collectively we can help drive positive technological change across the world.”
Andrei Mamolea is a historian of international law and politics, specializing in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. His research challenges the widespread notion that the United States was the driving force behind the development of international law during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, shifting attention to the neglected but important role of Latin America and East-Central Europe. He is currently working on two book projects that draw on extensive research in archives across the Americas and Europe.
“I am thrilled to be joining the Pardee School and its diverse community of students and scholars,” said Mamolea. “I especially look forward to offering a range of courses that will examine the politics and history as well as the theory and practice of international law. My aim will be to make this important subject, normally reserved for postgraduate study in the U.S., accessible to BU’s undergraduate students. A good comprehensive grasp of international law, including its limits and unrealized possibilities, is essential to understanding international politics, addressing urgent problems, and making the world a better place. I genuinely look forward to introducing Pardee students to the subject of international law.”
Ambassador (ret.) Mark C. Storella was a U.S. Foreign Service Officer for over three decades serving as Ambassador to Zambia, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Population, Refugees, and Migration, and Dean of the Leadership and Management School of the Foreign Service Institute. Ambassador Storella is the recipient of the Presidential Rank Award, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Excellence in Service Award, the Thomas Jefferson Award presented by American Citizens Abroad, and several Department of State superior and meritorious honor awards.
“I am thrilled to be joining the Pardee School’s first-rate faculty and diverse student body,” said Storella. “My three decades of diplomatic service, which included time as an ambassador and a Deputy Assistant Secretary of State, have convinced me that creative diplomacy is essential to tackle 21st century global challenges, from migration to health to climate to conflict prevention. I hope to encourage BU’s capable students to pursue public service and, no matter what their career paths, to use the art of diplomacy to for the common good.”
Adil Najam, Dean of the Pardee School, offered a warm welcome to the incoming faculty and expressed excitement for the expertise they’ll bring to enhance the school’s academic offerings. “I am delighted to welcome our new faculty members to the Pardee School and Boston University community. Our new distinguished colleagues come to us with various disciplinary experiences, each bringing unique perspectives that will enhance our teaching and research efforts. I look forward to working with Professors Greenacre, Mamolea, and Storella in bolstering the Pardee School’s strategic goals and mission of advancing human progress.”
