Selin Publishes Book “EU and Environmental Governance”
A new book co-authored by Henrik Selin, Associate Professor of International Relations at the Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University, focuses on the growing global role of EU environmental and sustainable development policies in Europe and around the world.
European Union and Environmental Governance was published in 2015 as part of the Global Institutions Series by Routledge Press. It was written by Selin and Stacy D. VanDeveer of the University of New Hampshire.
“I am very pleased and excited to see the book published,” said Selin. “It is the the most recent fruition of a long-standing scholarly interest in European integration and EU environmental politics that my co-author and I have shared for over 15 years.”
Written in a concise and accessible manner, this book introduces and examines the major European and global environmental issues, debates, and policies and provides a critical, evidence-based evaluation of the achievements and shortcomings to date in EU environmental and sustainability governance. Providing both an historical overview and a discussion of the major future legal, political and economic challenges to the realization of EU goals related to better environmental governance, the authors offer a comprehensive introduction to this key issue.
“The book looks at over four decades of EU environmental governance. It examines major policy progress to date, and critically explores obstacles and opportunities for creating a “greener” and more sustainable Europe,” Selin said. “After 40+ years of continuing environmental policy-making there are signs of a mid-life crisis, but the EU has established institutionally elaborate and strong structures upon which EU bodies, member states, and civil society organizations can build if they have the political will to so do.”
The book is currently available for purchase on Routledge’s website and pre-order on Amazon, with an availability date of May 26.
Selin conducts research and teaches classes on global and regional politics and policy making on environment and sustainable development. He is also the Associate Director of the Division of International Studies. Learn more about him here.
