Insights from Public Diplomacy Event
On Thursday, February 13th, Pardee Career Services hosted an inspiring “Pardee to Public Diplomacy.” The event featured Justin Dynia (Citizenship Diplomacy Manager, WorldBoston), Melinda Monzione (Director of Global Partnerships, Museum of Fine Arts), and Matthew Wong (Public Affairs Officer, Consulate General of Canada in Boston), moderated by Pardee Master’s in International Relations student Hannah Mefferd.
One of the key takeaways from the event was the path to diplomacy. Breaking into public diplomacy can be challenging, but persistence and networking are key. Justin Dynia emphasized the importance of starting locally and engaging with the community around you can be the first step toward a global career. He encouraged students to form both strong and loose connections, as opportunities can arise from unexpected places, and both those connections can serve different purposes.
Panelists highlighted that curiosity and a willingness to learn matter just as much as experience. Melinda Monzione noted that museums, often thought to be apolitical, play a significant role in cultural diplomacy as they shape narratives and determine whose stories get told. For those exploring careers in public diplomacy, demonstrating intellectual curiosity and adaptability is essential.
In this ever changing and rather unpredictable environment of international communication, it is of high importance to talk about the challenges and realities of public diplomacy and what awaits the world. Public diplomacy isn’t just high-profile negotiations; it sometimes involves crisis communication, event planning, and managing unexpected challenges. The panelists discussed the growing role of non-traditional stakeholders, and the funding challenges they face.
Mefferd moderated a Q&A session as the event unfolded. The panelists encouraged students to stay patient and persistent in their job search. “Don’t get discouraged—apply, focus on your goals, and be open to different opportunities,” they advised. Leveraging Pardee School resources, such as faculty mentorship and networking events, can provide valuable career guidance.
This event showcased the diverse paths within public diplomacy, from government roles to cultural institutions. As global challenges evolve, the opportunities in the field vary.
