Heine on Chile-China Relations

On October 13, 2023, Ambassador Jorge Heine, Research Professor at Boston University’s Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies and Interim Director of the Frederick S. Pardee Center for the Study of the Longer-Range Future, shared his insights with South China Morning Post about Chilean President Gabriel Boric’s visit to China. Heine anticipates that Boric will prioritize economic discussions during his meeting with Chinese leader Xi Jinping and is unlikely to broach contentious topics such as human rights.
Heine emphasized Boric’s participation in the third Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation, an initiative that plays a crucial role in fostering collaboration and infrastructure development. Heine noted,
“We recognize the BRI’s fluctuations and realize that the past couple of years, coupled with the pandemic, have impacted the Chinese economy. However, the BRI remains vital as a blueprint for collaborative development, championing infrastructure and mutual economic growth.”
