Schmidt Discusses New Book During Events Worldwide

Vivien SchmidtJean Monnet Professor of European Integration and Professor of International Relations and Political Science at the Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University, presented the findings of her latest book – Europe’s Crisis of Legitimacy: Governing by Rules and Ruling by Numbers in the Eurozone – during three recent events. 

On February 10, 2021, Schmidt joined the Manchester University Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence for a roundtable discussion titled “The Eurozone between Perpetual Crisis & A New Paradigm: Looking Back to Move Forward.” She was joined by Kevin Featherstone, Eleftherios Venizelos Professor in Contemporary Greek Studies and Professor in European Politics at the London School of Economics, and George Papaconstantinou, Chair of the European University Institute’s School of Transnational Governance. Speakers discussed dawn of the Eurozone’s third decade and what is at stake for the eurozone in the future after a decade of perpetual crisis. A recording of the event can be viewed below. 

On February 15, 2021, Schmidt spoke during a Sheffield Political Economy Research Institute (SPERI) book discussion. She presented the key arguments of her new book and considered the implications for an European Union (EU) that, with the ongoing pandemic, faces yet another crisis of its political economy. On February 22, 2021, Schmidt joined the Centre d’Etude de la Vie Politique (CEVIPOL) for an event titled “Legitimacy Lost and then Regained? From the Eurozone Crisis to the Covid-19 Pandemic.” During the event, she discussed the EU’s legitimacy from the Eurozone Crisis to the COVID-19 pandemic. Vivien Schmidt is Professor of International Relations and Jean Monnet Professor of European Integration at the Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies and was the first Director of BU’s Center for the Study of Europe, housed at the Pardee School. Schmidt’s research focuses on European political economy, institutions, democracy, and political theory—in particular on the importance of ideas and discourse in political analysis.
