Schmidt Quoted Discussing EU’s COVID-19 Rescue Package

On December 6, 2020, Vivien SchmidtJean Monnet Professor of European Integration and Professor of International Relations and Political Science at the Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University, was quoted in a Wall Street Journal article discussing the European Union’s (EU) strategy to kickstart a post-pandemic economic recovery.

The article, titled “Europe Seeks to Boost Pandemic-Damaged Economy by Spending,” details Europe’s plan to place government spending at the heart of efforts to stimulate the bloc’s economy in 2021 and beyond. Schmidt comments that this is a “paradigm shift” compared to the EU’s policy approach after the 2008 financial crisis as it encourages lending to southern European countries such as Italy that already have high levels of debt.
