Norton Publishes Updated Edition of Hezbollah: A Short History
Augustus Richard Norton, Professor Emeritus of International Relations and Anthropology at the Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University, recently published an updated and expanded third edition of his book Hezbollah: A Short History (Princeton University Press, 2018) featuring a new prologue and conclusion and two new chapters on recent developments.
In the book, Norton discusses Hezbollah’s entry into the Lebanese government in 2009, forceful intervention in the Syrian civil war, and the enormous role the potent Shi‘i political and military organization continues to play in the Middle East.
Norton’s incisive account stands as the most lucid, informed, and balanced analysis of Hezbollah yet written—and this expanded and fully updated third edition features a new prologue and conclusion and two new chapters largely devoted to the group’s recent activities, including its involvement in Syria. Hezbollah is a work of perennial importance and remains essential reading for anyone who wants to understand the Middle East.
Augustus Richard Norton’s research experience in the Middle East spans nearly three decades, including residences in Bahrain, Egypt, Jordan, Kuwait and Lebanon. His current research interests include inter-sectarian relations in the Middle East, reformist Muslim thought, and strategies of political reform and opposition in authoritarian states.
