Jeremy Menchik, Assistant Professor of International Relations at the Fredrick S. Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University, was recently interviewed on the run-off of Jakarta’s gubernatorial election which has pitted moderates in favor of a pluralism against conservatives eager for Islam to play a more prominent role in the city’s politics and society.

Menchik was quoted in an April 16, 2017 article in VOA entitled “Islamic Factor’ Colors Final Round of Jakarta Governor Vote.

From the text of the article:

Protests by hardliners against Purnama have left many “concerned about the future of pluralism in Indonesia,” said Jeremy Menchik, an assistant professor at the Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University, whose book Islam and Democracy in Indonesia: Tolerance without Liberalism was published last year. “There’s also a perception that intolerance is winning.”

Menchik took to Twitter following Jakarta’s gubernatorial runoff to weigh in on incumbent Basuki Tjahaja Purnama defeat to his main challenger, Anies Baswedan. Menchik’s tweets were featured in the Indonesian newspaper Tempo. Click on the tweet below to view the whole thread.
