William Keylor, Professor of International Relations and History at the Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University, was recently interviewed on whether the evolving relationship between President-Elect Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin could lead to a nuclear arms race.

Keylor was interviewed for a December 23, 2016 article in The Boston Herald entitled “Donald Trump Response to Vladimir Putin Eyed as Cold War Redux.”

From the text of the article:

“Russia has a serious problem with its nuclear deterrent force — it’s aging,” said Bill Keylor, an international relations professor at the Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University.

“So it has to upgrade it in order to maintain its deterrent policy, so that’s the reason I think why Putin is talking about spending funds to upgrade the Russian nuclear deterrent,” Keylor said.

“The United States’ nuclear triad is pretty old now,” he added, referring to the country’s ability to deploy nukes by land (missiles), by air (bombers) and by sea (submarines). “And it’s going to have to be upgraded if you wanted to maintain the nuclear balance. So that’s right back to the Cold War.”
