Erik Goldstein, Professor of International Relations and History at the Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University, discussed in a recent interview why the British royal family has become so ingrained in American pop culture.’

Goldstein was quoted in an April 20, 2016 article on the Christian Science Monitor entitled “Queen Elizabeth II at 90: Why the Royal Family Enchants Americans So Much.

From the text of the article:

“The royal family has played an important role in keeping the British-American relationship a special relationship,” says Goldstein. “It’s one of the symbolic bonds that has been useful in representing the complex historical links between the two countries.”

“The royal family is still relevant because it provides a point of unity,” says Goldstein. “They would have to do something deeply unpopular to risk their position because nobody has proposed a viable alternative for the country.”

Goldstein’s research interests include diplomacy, formulation of national diplomatic strategies, the origins and resolution of armed conflict, and negotiation. He has published in numerous journals, including Middle Eastern Studies, Review of International Relations, East European Quarterly, Historical Research, Historical Journal, Byzantine & Modern Greek Studies, and the Hague Journal of Diplomacy. Learn more about him here.
