Boston University’s Metropolitan College Announces New Master’s Degree in Software Development
September 2016, Boston—The Department of Computer Science at Boston University’s Metropolitan College (MET) has introduced the new Master of Science in Software Development (MSSD), available to students on campus and online. The program is one of the very few graduate degrees in the United States specifically designed for careers in software development.
U.S. News & World Report ranked “software developer” #2 on its list of Best Technology Jobs for 2016. With a ubiquitous and growing need for new and evolving software, the Boston University master’s program in Software Development is founded on the principle that developers must be team-players who are thoroughly practiced in understanding new requirements in diverse fields and who deliver secure, reliable software. The effectiveness over the past decade of agile methods in software development has shown that the creation of software is a continual back-and-forth process among multiple stakeholders rather than a classical engineering process.
“This degree is intended for anyone who wants to be employed as a developer of software or who wants to dramatically improve their software development capabilities,” says Associate Professor of Computer Science Eric Braude. “The program targets those who want to do software development because they like programming—they need not to have graduated with a bachelor’s in computer science or other technical field. The program is also ideal for those who want to move through the developer role into the management of software development teams.”
The MSSD consists of eight courses (32 credits), and can be completed in as few as 12 months. The core curriculum features the following six courses: Information Structures with Python (MET CS 521), Data Structures & Algorithms (MET CS 526); Advanced Java Programming (MET CS 622); Agile Software Development (MET CS 634); Software Design and Patterns (MET CS 665); and Information Systems Analysis and Design (MET CS 682).
“The new Software Development program, like all of Metropolitan College’s computer science programs, draws upon the expertise of faculty who are active researchers and who have held leadership positions across the industry,” says Metropolitan College Dean Tanya Zlateva. “For over 35 years, the Department of Computer Science has distinguished itself with excellent, high quality programs, both on campus and online. We are very happy to introduce this new program, which will answer the need for skilled software developers.”
In January, another graduate degree program offered by the department—the online Master of Science in Computer Information Systems—was ranked #3, Best Online Graduate Computer Information Technology Programs, by U.S. News & World Report. More recently, Boston University received a 21st Century Award for Best Practices in Distance Learning from the United States Distance Learning Association (USDLA).
