Apostolos Ampountolas is a scholar at the intersection of forecasting, financial econometrics, and hospitality finance who studies how uncertainty shapes demand, prices, investment risk, and managerial decisions. His work is united by a simple premise: uncertainty cannot be eliminated, but it can be measured, forecast, priced, and managed. Drawing on econometrics, machine learning, and quantitative finance, he develops models that help organizations and investors make better decisions across hospitality, real estate, and financial markets.
Dr. Ampountolas is Associate Professor of Hospitality Finance and Chair of Academic Programs at the Boston University School of Hospitality Administration, where he leads admissions strategy, curriculum, and industry partnerships for the school’s graduate programs alongside his research and teaching.
His research applies this perspective across several interconnected settings. In hospitality, he studies demand forecasting, pricing, revenue management, booking cancellations, and the financial performance of hotel and real estate assets. In financial markets, he examines volatility, spillovers, market regimes, and the transmission of shocks across equities, real estate investment trusts, cryptocurrencies, and other asset classes. His recent work extends this research agenda to political uncertainty, sustainable finance, ESG investing, and climate-related financial risk.
Dr. Ampountolas has published extensively in leading journals across hospitality, tourism, and finance, including Tourism Management, International Journal of Hospitality Management, Annals of Tourism Research, International Journal of Contemporary Hospitality Management, Tourism Economics, Finance Research Letters, Research in International Business and Finance, and the Journal of Behavioral and Experimental Finance. His scholarship has received a Highly Cited Paper Certificate and an Emerald Literati Award for Highly Commended Paper, and he serves on the editorial boards of several academic journals.
Before entering academia, Dr. Ampountolas spent nearly two decades in the international travel and services industry, progressing from tour operations to senior commercial leadership at the Kuoni Group. There, he directed pricing, contracting, and market-sourcing strategies across European markets. This experience continues to shape his research and teaching, grounding his quantitative work in the operational realities of demand uncertainty, capacity allocation, pricing, and revenue decision-making.
He subsequently held faculty and visiting appointments at César Ritz Colleges University of Applied Sciences Institute, Switzerland, the University of Zurich, and ESSEC Business School before returning to Boston University. Across his industry and academic careers, he has developed a distinctive profile at the intersection of hospitality finance, forecasting, and quantitative risk analysis.
Dr. Ampountolas holds a Ph.D. from the University of Exeter, UK, a Certificate in Quantitative Finance (CQF) from the CQF Institute, and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA). He is an active member of the European Finance Association (EFA), the International Institute of Forecasters (IIF), and the Global Association of Risk Professionals (GARP). Through advisory work for the Hellenic Foundation for Research and Innovation and Greece’s National Council for Research, Technology, and Innovation, he has contributed to national research-funding decisions and science policy. His research and commentary have been featured by CBS News and Business Insider.
