Peter Buston is an Associate Professor of Biology and the Director of the BU Marine Program. His research focuses on understanding cooperation, conflict, and negotiations in animal societies, along with understanding larval dispersal and population connectivity of marine fishes. His research combines long-term field studies with experimental manipulations, molecular genetics, and mathematical modeling. He uses a hypothesis-driven approach to address fundamental questions at the interface of behavioral-, population-, and evolutionary biology in marine systems.

Dr. Buston earned his BA Hons in Zoology from Oxford University and his Ph.D. in Neurobiology and Behavior from Cornell University. Subsequently, he completed postdocs in Evolutionary Ecology at the National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis (NCEAS) in Santa Barbara, California, and in Integrative Ecology at the Estación Biológica de Doñana in Sevilla, Spain.
