Research Associate Professor, Mechanical Engineering, College of Engineering
Pablo Ruiz is a Research Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering. His research focuses on electric power systems operations and planning, renewables integration to the power grid, electricity markets analysis and design, coordination of gas and electric infrastructures, and energy policy.
He served as the Principal Investigator for the DOE ARPA-E Topology Control Algorithms project, leading a team of researchers from seven institutions in the development of transmission topology control technology. This technology is being used to develop decision support and simulation tools by NewGrid Inc., a software company co-founded by Dr. Ruiz.
Dr. Ruiz is currently working on co-optimization and coordination mechanisms for the operation of natural gas pipeline and electric networks in a project supported by DOE ARPA-E with industrial partners Kinder Morgan and PJM (the largest pipeline and power grid operators in North America, respectively). He is also working on optimization of electric power distribution networks and related market design problems.
Dr. Ruiz has published broadly cited papers in the preeminent journal in his field, the IEEE Transactions on Power Systems, as well as other venues. Dr. Ruiz research has been featured in Popular Science and Greenwich Media.
