Christoph Nolte, CAS associate professor of Earth and environment, studies land conservation decisions and the effectiveness of environmental policies. His research draws on geography, economics, and data science to infer causal effects of land conservation, estimate conservation costs, and value environmental amenities and risks. He leads and coleads several grants from NASA and NSF that combine satellite and social data to estimate effects of public conservation finance, develop cost-effective strategies for long-term conservation, and track changes to lake water quality amenities. He has published over 50 articles in leading interdisciplinary journals, including PNASFrontiers in Ecology and the EnvironmentConservation Letters, and Land Economics

Prior to joining the faculty at Boston University, he completed a Postdoc at Stanford University with Eric Lambin and received his PhD from the University of Michigan in 2014. His research has been supported by the National Science Foundation, the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, and the Rights and Resources Initiative, among others.
