Azer Bestavros Announced as Associate Provost for Computing and Data Sciences

We are delighted to share with the Hariri Institute community and beyond, the appointment of Azer Bestavros as the Inaugural Associate Provost for Computing and Data Sciences at Boston University.

Professor Bestavros is the William Fairfield Warren Distinguished Professor in the Department of Computer Science, Founding Director of BU’s Rafik B. Hariri Institute for Computing and Computational Science & Engineering, and Chair of the BU Data Science Initiative. With his vision of cross-disciplinary research, the Institute has been at the forefront of computational, data-driven initiatives within the university and beyond. A member of the BU faculty since 1991 and past chair of Computer Science, Professor Bestavros is recognized for his research in networking and distributed systems, most recently focusing on development, and real-world deployment of scalable secure Multi-Party Computation in support of privacy-preserving big-data analytics.

In his new role as Associate Provost for Computing and Data Sciences, Professor Bestavros will work closely with Provost Morrison, senior academic leaders, and faculty in establishing the policies, operating principles, and strategy of the Faculty of Computing & Data Sciences. Slated to be housed in the new Computing & Data Sciences Building, this new unit will enable BU to build a collaborative and interdisciplinary interface between our traditional academic units and the faculty and students interested in the methodological and applied dimensions of computing and data sciences. Professor Bestavros will lead the unit and serve as a member of the Council of Deans.
