The Hariri Institute for Computing will be hosting Frank Pasquale (Professor of Law, University of Maryland) for a Data Science Initiative (DSI) Colloquium hosted in collaboration with the Center for Reliable Information Systems & Cyber Security (RISCS) and BU/MIT Technology & Cyberlaw Clinic.

Professor Pasquale’s research focuses on information law and the obstacles it faces due rapidly changing technology, particularly in the health care, internet, and finance industries. As a member of the NSF-funded Council for Big Data, Ethics, and Society, and as an Affiliate Fellow of Yale Law School’s Information Society Project, Pasquale frequently presents on the ethical, legal, and social implications of information technology. His book  The Black Box Society: The Secret Algorithms that Control Money and Information (Harvard University Press, 2015) develops a social theory of reputation, search, and finance.

Professor Pasquale is currently researching ways to govern data collection, analysis, and use. He participated in a 2010 roundtable discussion of the Yale Law School titled “Reproducible Research: Addressing the Need for Data and Code Sharing in Computational Science.” The roundtable discussed the difficulties of making progress in computational science because of the inability for other scientists to independently reproduce results. Members of the roundtable discussed a series of steps, best practices, and long-term goals for the development of new tools and standards. Read more about Professor Pasquale here.
