Modelling Quantum Systems – Highlights from the Dodd-Walls Centre, New Zealand’s new national Centre of Research Excellence
12:00 PM on August 5th, 2015
Physics Research Building, 3 Cummington Mall, Room 595
Abstract: After a decade of effort, the quantum and atomic physics community in New Zealand has managed to secure substantial funding for a national Centre of Research Excellence. The Centre, hosted by the University of Otago, spans five universities and builds on the legacy of quantum optics established by Dan Walls and Crispin Gardiner. In this talk I will introduce the Centre and illustrate some of the research already being undertaken and point towards our aspirations. I will concentrate on the use of stochastic methods for quantum simulation throughout. In particular I will concentrate on work using truncated Wigner and stochastic Gross-Pitaevskii Equation methods for dissipation in superfluid flows past barriers, relaxation dynamics in quenches and the role of disorder and synthetic gauge fields in ultra cold atomic systems.
