Professor Luca Dal Negro has received a $600K grant from the U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command Army Research Laboratory (DEVCOM ARL) for a project aimed at new approaches to improving single-photon detection, leveraging non-Hermitian nonlinear wave phenomena, and ultimately leading to the development, fabrication and characterization of infrared radiation sensing devices. The work, which will center on engineering spectral singularities (“exceptional points”) of resonant nanostructures  in the nonlinear regime to boost device sensitivity, will generate innovative approaches to the study of photon detection and control more broadly.

Professor Luca Dal Negro earned his PhD at the University of Trento, Italy, in 2003. He is an Optica Fellow, and the recipient of several early career awards. His research interests include nanophotonics and metamaterials, nonlinear and quantum optics, laser physics, wave localization phenomena and diffractive optics for advanced imaging and multifunctional optical devices.
