Continuing Education Programming at the Danielsen Institute
The Danielsen Institute sponsors continuing education programming in various formats and expressions. Our continuing education programs include an annual Speaker Series, Danielsen conferences, workshops and presentations at professional meetings, and topical trainings for mental health professionals. These programs are advertised through flyers, email announcements, and webpages.
We also have Professional Development programs designed for DI staff and affiliates. These programs are announced through internal email invitations, and general information is available in our Policies and Procedures Manual or by contacting makanise@bu.edu.
Our programs are designed to help psychologists, social workers, marriage and family therapists, and other mental health professional improve their knowledge, awareness, and skills in order to better serve clients and other constituencies. In some cases, our programs may also be useful for religious and community leaders who provide care in community contexts.
A narrative program description, educational objectives, program schedule, number of CE credits, and speaker name and qualifications will all be presented in the specific program announcement. References are available upon request. Deadliness for registration, refund/cancellation policy, and other details may be obtained by emailing makanise@bu.edu.
In general, our continuing education programs operate at an intermediate instructional level, i.e., they presume some familiarity with the domain but supported increased expertise and skillfulness. Programs operating at a different instructional level will be identified as such in the advertising/notification.
Any commercial support or potential conflicts of interest will be explicitly disclosed in the program email/announcement.
Grievances or complaints will be handled as described below.
The Danielsen Institute is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. The Danielsen Institute maintains responsibility for any CE program and its content. Social Work credits are applied for through the Network for Professional Education at BU School of Social Work. LMFT credits are applied for through the New England Association of Family and Systemic Therapy (NEAFAST).
Please direct any questions about particular CE programs to Makena Shaughnessy at makanise@bu.edu or 617-353-1100.
Policy for Grievances/Complaints related to Danielsen Institute Continuing Education Programming
The Danielsen Institute at Boston University (DI) is fully committed to conducting all activities in strict conformance with the ethical codes of all of its participating disciplines (psychology, social work, marriage and family therapy, clinical nursing). The DI will actively attend to and comply with legal and ethical responsibilities to be non-discriminatory in promotional activities, program content and in the treatment of program participants. The monitoring and assessment of compliance with these standards will be the responsibility of the Director of Training in consultation with the Director of Administration and Finance, the DI Management Team, and the Executive Director.
While the DI goes to great lengths to assure fair treatment for all participants and attempts to anticipate problems, there may be occasional issues which come to the attention of the Director of Training or the Director of Administration and Finance, which will require intervention and/or action by them or by an officer of the DI. This procedural description serves as a guideline for handling such grievances. When a participant files a grievance, either orally or in written format, and expects action on the complaint, the following actions will be taken.
- If the grievance concerns a speaker, the content presented by a speaker, or the style of presentation, the individual filing the grievance will be asked to put his/her comments in written format. The Director of Training will then pass on the comments to the speaker, assuring the confidentiality of the grieved individual.
- If the grievance concerns a particular program offering, its content, level of presentation, or the facilities in which the workshop was offered, the Director of Training and the Director of Administration and Finance will try to bring the matter to final resolution with input from the Management Team as appropriate. If the grievance cannot be resolved at this level, the matter will be forwarded to the Executive Director. Should further action be required, the Institute will refer the matter to the appropriate resources at Boston University. In these matters, the resolution may include a partial or full refund or a credit toward a future program if the participant has paid a fee for the program.
- If the grievance concerns the DI Continuing Education Program, in a specific regard, the Director of Community Education will try to bring the matter to final resolution with input from the Management Team as appropriate. If the grievance cannot be resolved at this level, the matter will be forwarded to the Executive Director. Should further action be required, the Institute will refer the matter to the appropriate resources at Boston University.
