Important Information

Overnight Parking for On-campus Resident Students

Driving in Boston can be notoriously difficult.  Large construction projects, high traffic volume, and angled one-way streets add to the unforgettable experience.  As a result, most students wisely leave their vehicles at home.  In fact fewer than 2% or our on-campus resident students purchase overnight parking permits.  Students who must park their vehicles overnight on-campus should know that overnight parking permits are initially sold only to on-campus residents and then to off-campus students on a first-come-first-served basis.

Overnight parking is typically located in alleyways to the rear of student residences within the East, Central, and South Campus areas.  Overnight student parking is NOT AVAILABLE to the west of the Boston University Bridge.

Daytime Student Parking

Boston University students are eligible to purchase permits that authorize parking in designated University facilities, lots, and spaces.  University parking permits provide substantial cost savings.

Parking permits may be purchased, exchanged, and returned to Parking & Transportation Services (PTS), George Sherman Union, 775 Commonwealth Avenue, second floor.

You must present your valid Boston University Terrier Card and a completed application, when you purchase your parking permit.  Application forms are available at the PTS office transaction windows.  You can just stop by and fill one out.  Students applying for an Orange student overnight parking permit must also provide a vehicle registration issued in their name or in the name of their parent or legal guardian.

With the exception of car pool permits, a person may purchase a maximum of one permit and that permit can be used only for the vehicle for which it is issued.

Parking permit purchases may be made with cash, check, or MasterCard/Visa/Discover.  Payments for parking permits cannot be charged to student accounts.

Specialty Permits

Handicapped Permit Holders
Handicapped permit holders are provided designated spaces in all attended parking lots. Students who require handicapped parking permits must first contact Disability Services (617-353-3658, 19 Deerfield Street) to certify their disability. Parking & Transportation Services will accept a valid state-issued HP registration or placard as certification of a disability. Please bring this with you to Parking & Transportation Services when you apply for your permit.

Student Car Pool Permits
A car pool applicant must be a student who is eligible for a Blue permit. Two or more Boston University students must apply together to receive a car pool permit. All completed applications with selected payment options must be submitted at the same time. Preferential parking spaces will be held in designated parking lots for officially registered University car pool groups. To take advantage of one of these spaces, please inform the Parking & Transportation Services representative of the parking facility (Lot B or F) that is best suited to your group when the car pool permit is issued.

To ensure that car pool permit charges are correctly assessed, any changes to a car pool membership (additions or deletions) requires the return, and if applicable, the issuing of a new permit. Car pool permits are the only type of permit that is transferable between car pool members. Car pool members will also be issued “Black” pay-on-entry permits. If for any reason the car pool permit is not in the vehicle, you must then park in an attended lot using your “Black” permit and pay the daily cash rate. To take advantage of the Ride Matching Program and establish a car pool or van pool group, please visit us at www.bu.edu/parking/ridematch for directions and qualifications.

Motorcycle Permits
Motorcycle Permits are required and available at Parking & Transportation Services, George Sherman Union, 775 Commonwealth Avenue, second floor.

University Tenant Parking
A “University tenant” is anyone renting an apartment through Boston University’s Rental Property Management Office.  Rental Property Management maintains their own parking spaces for tenants.  For further information regarding their services, please contact the Rental Property Management Office at 617-353-4102.

Returns/Refunds

Your permit must be returned to Parking & Transportation Services when:

A. You wish to receive any type of refund.
B. Your vehicle is sold, or its registration is changed in any way.
C. Your permit has been defaced in any way. (A replacement permit will be issued at no charge.)
D. If you withdraw or take a leave of absence from the University.

Lost/Stolen Permit Fees
A $75 lost/stolen permit fee will be assessed for lost or stolen permits that are not returned when you apply for a replacement or terminate your use of a permit. The $75 lost/stolen permit fee must be paid at the time the new permit is issued. This fee will be waived if you provide Parking & Transportation Services with a police report of a loss or theft.

Permit Replacement Fee
A $25 transaction fee will be assessed when two or more replacement permits are issued to a permit holder between September 1, 2008 and August 31, 2009.  The transaction fee will be waived when a permit is issued to replace one that has been defaced or stolen, or when a change in a vehicle’s registration requires the replacement.  A defaced permit must be returned to Parking & Transportation Services before a replacement permit will be issued. In cases involving permit theft, a copy of the associated police report must be provided before the permit replacement fee will be waived.

Refunds
Refunds will be made only upon notification of and the return of the permit to Parking & Transportation Services. Refunds are prorated on a weekly basis. The indicated monthly rate is calculated on a full 12-month cycle. Owing to the varying number of weeks in any given month, if the permit is not held for the full 12 months, we will revert to the weekly rate schedule to accurately calculate charges and refunds. There are no refunds issued for White evening permits after the second week of classes. Parking permits become void when removed from the surface to which they have been adhered. The remaining plastic backing must be returned for a refund.

Permit Placement

permit placement diagram

Note: Permits are not valid unless all previous years' permits have been completely removed and the current permit is prominently displayed on a University provided hanger or permanently affixed to a stationary window. A $5 fee is assessed for anyone requesting a hanger for only one vehicle. Hangers are not provided for orange permits because they must be properly affixed to the driver’s side rear window of the vehicle for which they are issued.

Alternative Vehicle Use

If you are a permit holder in good standing and during an emergency you use a vehicle not registered with Parking & Transportation Services, or, for any reason, cannot display your permit on your vehicle, you must park at one of the attended lots and request a Substitute Vehicle Form from the parking lot attendant. Please provide the attendant your BUID card and/or the license plate of the vehicle registered with Parking & Transportation Services. If you anticipate using your substitute vehicle for more then a week, please contact the Parking & Transportation Services at (617) 353-2160.  Please see the Parking Map for lot locations and hours of operation.  This does not apply to Orange permit holders. Orange permit holders must notify Parking & Transportation Services of the use of an alternate vehicle. Failure to notify Parking & Transportation Services may result in the towing of that vehicle. Please note that it is against our regulations to park two cars on campus simultaneously.

Non-Massachusetts Student Resident
Vehicle Registration

Massachusetts Law requires that every non-resident enrolled as a student at a school or college in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts who operates a motor vehicle registered in another state or country for more than thirty days within the Commonwealth during any period beginning September 1st of any year and ending August 31st of the following year shall, on or before such thirtieth day, file in triplicate with the department of the city or town in which said school or college is located on a form approved by the Registry of Motor Vehicles, a statement signed by him/her under penalties of perjury providing the following information: registration number and make of the motor vehicle, and the state or country of registration, the name and address of the owner, the legal residence while attending school or college, and the name of the school or college he/she is attending. Any such non-resident who fails to comply with the provisions of the paragraph shall be punished by a fine of not more than fifty dollars.

These non-resident student information forms are available through Parking & Transportation Services, and upon registration of the out-of-state vehicle an additional registration permit will be issued to comply with this regulation. There is no fee for this registration. This form is also available online from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles.

Miscellaneous

Parking Availability
Purchasing a parking permit does not guarantee a parking space will always be available on campus in the most convenient location or during major events or unusual circumstances. The unavailability of a convenient parking space, severe weather, or running late for a class or meeting are not considered valid excuses for violating any of the University’s parking regulations.   All University parking spaces are clearly identified by posted signs or pavement markings. If an area is not specifically marked for parking, you should assume that you may not park there.

Parking Notification
Due to University events and campus construction, in some instances, it may be necessary to clear or close a particular parking facility or limit the number of parking spaces available.

Whenever possible, Parking & Transportation Services will attempt to notify permit holders in advance of the date(s) and time(s) that parking in a particular facility will be disrupted through a variety of methods that may include the use of e-mails, event calendars, flyers, signs, and Website announcements. Should you have questions or need assistance to locate a vehicle that has been moved during an emergency, please contact Parking & Transportation Services between the hours of 9:00AM and 5:00PM, Monday – Friday, or the Boston University Police Department at (617) 353-2110 or the Boston Tow Line at (617) 343-4629 after regular business hours, on holidays and weekends.

Reporting an Accident
All accidents involving a motor vehicle on campus must be immediately reported to the Boston University Police Department at 617-353-2110.
