Professor Stanley Lemeshow Presented with L. Adrienne Cupples Award.
Stanley Lemeshow, professor of biostatistics at Ohio State University (OSU), received the 2019 recipient of the Department of Biostatistics’ annual L. Adrienne Cupples Award for Excellence in Teaching, Research and Service in Biostatistics on April 4. The department chose Lemeshow for the award based on his longterm record of achievement in the biostatistics field, his dedication to mentoring students and faculty, his record in collaborative research, and his service to the profession.
During his time at OSU, Lemeshow has served as director of the biostatistics program and director of the Center of Biostatistics, among several other positions. Prior to joining OSU, Lemeshow taught at the School of Public Health and Health Sciences at UMass Amherst and had several appointments as visiting professor in Paris and Bordeaux, France.
Over the last 35 years, Lemshow has overseen and taught approximately 50 short courses in the biostatistics field, focusing on logistic regression, categorical data, and sampling methods. He is the author of 13 textbooks, more than 30 book chapters, and more than 175 manuscripts in the field of biostatistics. He has received numerous honors, including the Wiley Lifetime Award, Fellow of the American Statistical Association, and Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
Cupples joined SPH in 1981 and served as the founding chair of the Department of Biostatistics and co-executive director of the Graduate Program in Biostatistics. During her time at SPH, she has advanced the field of biostatistics through more than 600 publications in major journals and book chapters on collaborative and methodological research, development and effective teaching of a wide range of biostatistics courses, and mentorship of numerous graduate students and faculty.
Lemeshow also gave a presentation, “Assessing Calibration of Logistic Regression Models Developed From Extremely Large Data Sets,” to approximately 50 SPH faculty and students.
