What is the Activist Lab Student Engagement Internship?
The Student Engagement Internship is all about connecting the BUSPH student body to the Activist Lab’s numerous outreach initiatives. This job entails writing editorial content for SPH, developing social media and marketing campaigns, contributing to community outreach initiatives, attending faculty meetings and various SPH events, conducting interviews, being interviewed, and so much more!
What brought you to BUSPH and why did you apply to this opportunity?
BUSPH reeled me in with its commitment to diversity and its endless scope for learning. There is simply no other MPH program that is so perfectly tailored to both my public health career aspirations and to my personal interests. I applied to this position in the Activist Lab so I could pursue three main goals: 1) advocating to improve the health of the public, 2) empowering and encouraging others to become actively involved in the community and 3) promoting diversity. I want to build awareness on difficult topics such as racial disparities in healthcare; I want to talk about those things that people don’t want to talk about. There is no better place to do so than in the Activist Lab.
What are you looking forward to most from this experience?
I’m most looking forward to working alongside experienced public health professionals in our collective pursuit of improving health for all. I think this will really help me cultivate my own perspectives on healthcare inequities in Boston. It’s one thing to read about something in the paper; it’s another thing to get out in the community and see it for yourself. And it’s another thing to actually do something about it. I want it all!
I would also really like to learn more about the dynamic field of health communications, especially through writing. Writing has always been a passion of mine; being able to contribute to the Activist Lab’s editorial platform would allow me to write in forums that have vast audiences, and at the same time, to write content that bridges the gap between public health and other departments. I’m excited to get a little creative within this position.
What do you want students to know about the Activist Lab and your role?
Students should know that the Activist Lab is pretty influential in effecting change and advancing the health of the public all around Massachusetts. My role as the Student Engagement Intern is to help students translate their passion for public health into action!
