MA Gun Laws and Advocacy Training.
Stop Handgun Violence, M&R, and the Activist Lab have come together to provide a community training opportunity around gun safety and advocacy. During this seminar, you will receive a foundational knowledge about gun violence and why it is considered a public health crisis, current laws on the state and federal levels, and a toolkit for creating sustainable change through advocacy.
When: Saturday, April 28th from 8:30 AM – 1:00 PM
Where: Hiebert Lounge
The main piece of legislation we will be discussing is the pending Extreme Risk Prevention Order (Representative Decker’s H.3610) currently in the Joint Committee on Public Safety. The Extreme Risk Protective Order (ERPO) is based on the long-standing infrastructure and procedure of domestic violence protective orders (in place in all 50 states) and involves both a court hearing and clearly defined due process protections. An ERPO is a civil court order issued by a judge upon consideration of the evidence, prompted by petition by a family member, law enforcement officer, or district attorney that temporarily prohibits a person in crisis from possessing or purchasing firearms or ammunition. ERPOs provide families and law enforcement officers with a formal legal process to temporarily reduce an individual’s access to firearms if they pose a danger to themselves or others.
