A “bridge” between the Activist Lab and the SPH student body.

The Activist Lab is excited to welcome our newest member, Mallory Bersi, who will be working as the Student Engagement Intern through the fall. Mallory is a current student specializing in Health Communication & Promotion as well as Maternal & Child Health.

Mallory Bersi Activist Lab Student Engagement Intern

Breakfast: I rarely eat breakfast, but when I do, it’s usually avocado toast (I’m basic, and I love it).

Hometown: A small town in Texas called Granbury

Extracurriculars:  Relaxing at home because I’m genuinely an 80-year-old woman at heart. But when it’s nice out, I like to explore the city with my roommates.

What is the Activist Lab Student Engagement Internship?
The Student Engagement Internship focuses on communication outreach and, of course, engaging the SPH student body. An easy way of thinking about the position is as a “bridge” between the Activist Lab and the BUSPH student body. Much of what the job entails is the development of social media and email marketing campaigns as a means of recruiting and engaging students to get involved with the many activities at the Activist Lab and BUSPH, in general. The communications side of the position requires more writing and designing of promotional material; this can include publishing editorial content in SPH This Week, live-tweeting events, interviewing event participants, and more.

What made you decide to apply?
I applied for this internship because it seemed right up my alley. I am pursuing the health communications and promotion certificate, so I was very interested in learning more about this aspect of public health outside of the classroom. Additionally, I have had some experience with social media and marketing in the past, but I wanted to hone my skills in these areas, as I am interested in pursuing this type of work in the future. I also felt that this position would be an excellent opportunity to become more connected with the BUSPH community, as a whole.

What are you looking forward to most from this experience?
I’m most looking forward to the opportunity to build relationships with public health leaders inside and outside of the BUSPH community. Going to BUSPH, I feel we have a lot of opportunities at our fingertips, so I want to capitalize on those opportunities through this position as a means of increasing awareness for the Activist Lab and all of the great work that happens here. On an entirely personal level, I also look forward to bettering my communication skills through this position. I fully believe that excellent communication skills can carry you far in both your professional and personal life, so working on these skills is especially important to me.

What do you want students to know about the Activist Lab and your role?
I want students to understand that the Activist Lab is doing great things for progressing public health in Massachusetts and elsewhere and that there are many ways for them to get involved in these efforts. If students are interested in getting more involved, they are always welcome to contact me (activist@bu.edu). In my role as Student Engagement Intern, I am here for the students, so I want to be able to help them get involved in any way that I can. My inbox is always open!
