Achieng headshotMPH student Alice Achieng has been awarded an International Fellowship from the American Association of University Women (AAUW).

AAUW selects international fellows based on academic achievement, scholarly promise, and demonstrated commitment to women and girls.

Achieng, who is from Kenya, has spent the last three years working as a case manager with low-income elderly people and people with disabilities—the vast majority of them widowed women—in the MetroWest region of Massachusetts.

“I feel so privileged to have been awarded the AAUW International Fellowship,” Achieng says. The award will support her as she studies health inequities and global poverty challenges: “This fellowship will help me work toward finishing my MPH in Global Health and achieving my goal to improve public health, especially in developing countries.”

“Our members are very concerned about the status of women here and abroad, and these fellowship programs allow us to extend our reach in a meaningful way,”  Gloria Blackwell, AAUW vice president of fellowships, grants, and global programs, said in a statement. “It’s all about women helping women.”

Founded in 1881, the American Association of University Women (AAUW) empowers women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy, and research. For the 2016–2017 academic year, AAUW awarded a total of $3.7 million to more than 230 scholars, research projects, and programs promoting education and equity for women and girls through six fellowship and grant programs. The first AAUW International Fellowship was awarded in 1917, making it one of the oldest fellowships in the United States.
