Joel Lamstein headshotJoel Lamstein was appointed the new chair of the School of Public Health’s Dean’s Advisory Board on January 1, 2016.

Lamstein is president and co-founder of John Snow Inc. (JSI), a public health management consulting and research organization based in Boston. He also serves as president of World Education Inc., a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of the poor through education, economic, and social development programs.

In 1973, Lamstein co-founded Management Sciences for Health (MSH), a private, nonprofit international organization working in public health areas to strengthen health care management and improve access.

Lamstein is a senior lecturer at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and has lectured at public health schools throughout the country.

In 2009, Lamstein received the CEO Social Leadership Award, a program funded by the Lewis Family Foundation and given by the Boston Business Journal. He holds a BS in math and physics from the University of Michigan and attended the MIT Sloan School of Management.

In 2012, Lamstein committed to endowing the Lamstein Family/JSI Scholarship to support one or more annual scholarship awards to MPH students at SPH. JSI has long been a source of practicums for SPH students as well as jobs for graduates.

“I am honored to be appointed the chair of the advisory board,” Lamstein says. “BU, always an important part of the public health community, is poised to play an even more substantive role under the visionary leadership of Dean Galea.”

In addition to the Dean’s Advisory Board, Lamstein also serves on the advisory boards of the University of Michigan School of Public Health and the Harvard Center for Population and Development Studies, as well as the board of Physicians for Human Rights and the advisory council of the Children’s Health Fund in New York. From 2004 to 2012, he served on the board of the Global Health Council.

The advisory board, a group of prominent alumni and friends of SPH, works with Dean Galea and other School leaders on strategy and resource development. The other members are:

  • Andrew Dreyfus – President and CEO, Massachusetts Blue Cross Blue Shield
