Public Health Forum, April 9: Dr. Josiah Rich to Discuss Epidemics of Prison, AIDS, and Drug Overdoses.

April 4, 2014
Twitter Facebook

We are in the midst of three overlapping epidemics: incarceration, HIV/AIDS and opioid overdose deaths, contends Dr. Josiah D. Rich, a professor of medicine and epidemiology at Brown University. Rich will be the guest lecturer at the monthly BUSPH Public Health Forum on Wednesday, April 9.

His talk, held from noon to 1 p.m. in room L-112, will explore the similarities and differences and synergistic overlapping aspects of these epidemics and discuss options to address all three. They are key elements of Dr. Rich’s research interests, which include the overlap between infectious diseases and addiction; incarcerated populations and public health opportunities in the criminal justice system; HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis B and C, and sexually transmitted diseases; and global health.

Biography

Josiah D. Rich, MD, MPH is Professor of Medicine and Epidemiology at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University and Attending Physician at The Miriam Hospital with expertise in infectious diseases and addiction. He is Principal Investigator of three R01’s, one R21 and a K24 all focused on incarcerated populations.

He is the Director and Co-founder of The Center for Prisoner Health and Human Rights at The Miriam Hospital Immunology Center (www.prisonerhealth.org). He is also a Co-Founder of the nationwide Centers for AIDS Research (CFAR) collaboration in HIV in corrections (CFAR/CHIC) initiative. Dr. Rich has advocated for public health policy changes to improve the health of people with addiction, including improving legal access to sterile syringes and increasing drug treatment for the incarcerated and formerly incarcerated populations.
