September 5, 2012
Twitter Facebook

The event is designed to enable students to see how public health concepts and practice intersect in the real world by providing intensive interaction with obesity and policy experts, BUSPH faculty, and staff.

Date: Tuesday, September 11, 2012

Time: 11:45am-1:50pm, Hiebert Lounge

The Issue:

The workshop will offer an in-depth analysis of the myriad public health consequences surrounding the proposed New York City law that would ban large sizes of sugar-laden soft drinks. The list of expert panelists includes:

  • Huy Nguyen, MD, Medical Director, Boston Public Health Commission
  • Leonard Glantz, Professor of Health Law, Bioethics and Human Rights, BUSPH
  • Henrietta Davis, Mayor, City of Cambridge
  • Dave Andelman, CEO of Phantom Gourmet, and President of the Restaurant and Business Alliance
  • Virginia Chomitz, PhD, Assistant Professor, Public Health and Community Medicine, Tufts School of Medicine
  • Barbara Corkey, PhD, Professor, Obesity Research Center, Boston University School of Medicine

Please note that lunch will be provided at 11:30 a.m. for panelists and student participants.

The session itself will begin at 12:00 pm and end by 1:50 pm so that students can get to 2 p.m. classes.

Format:

During the first part of the session, panelists will each give a brief overview of their view on the proposed policy.

Following that, each panelist will sit at a separate table, and students will have the opportunity to ask further questions about their thoughts and perspectives on the issues. Panelists will switch tables after approximately 8 minutes to allow an opportunity for all small groups of students to speak with each panelist.

Students will then be asked to engage in a brief deliberation (5 minutes) and vote on the issue. To conclude, there will be an opportunity for the panelists to engage in a further discussion moderated by Harold Cox, associate dean of public health practice.

Schedule:

11:30 – 12:00 Lunch

12:00 – 12:20 Brief (2-3 minute) overviews from each panelist

12:20 – 1:10 Group Q&A discussions with panelist & students (8 minutes / table)

1:10 – 1:15 Preliminary deliberations by students at each table

1:15 – 1:45 Larger group discussion among panelists, facilitated by Harold Cox

1:45 – 1:50 Wrap-up and conclusion
