LGBTQIA+ Scholar Series Panel - Meeting This Moment: State And Federal Legal Landscape After Skrmetti And Mahmoud.

  • Starts: 11:30 am on Friday, September 19, 2025
  • Ends: 1:00 pm on Friday, September 19, 2025
Join BU faculty for a deep dive into this past June’s SCOTUS rulings in US v. Skrmetti, which upheld Tennessee’s ban on health care for transgender youth, and Mahmoud v. Taylor, which upheld parents’ First Amendment rights to opt their children out of K-12 curriculum; five books with LGBTQIA+ content were at the center of this case. We will also be discussing what is on the horizon, including Chiles v. Salazar, an upcoming case out of Colorado that involves a First Amendment challenge to a ban on conversion therapy by licensed professionals. All three cases have profound implications for the well-being of LGBTQIA+ people and the community. Panelists include: - Aziza Ahmed, Professor of Law and N. Neal Pike Scholar; - Linda C. McLain, Robert Kent Professor of Law; - Carl G. Streed, Associate Professor of Medicine/GIM; Research Director, GenderCare Center at BMC; - Michael Ulrich, Associate Professor, School of Public Health and School of Law; and - Darien Williams, Assistant Professor, School of Social Work.
