Dear Colleagues,

In the summer of 2022, the School launched our syllabus assessment tool to examine how our principles of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Justice (DEIJ) are being infused in the classroom. Teaching is a core principle of BUSPH, and it is a vital pillar of the school’s 10-point plan. The syllabus assessment initiative aims to provide instructors with guidance on how to engage effectively with DEIJ principles in the classroom.

As a reminder, the goal of this process is for instructors to do a self-evaluation that will allow them to identify areas of strength and areas of growth and improvement towards ensuring that all teaching aligns with our goals for DEIJ. This process is non-evaluative and is meant to help guide instructors, as well as inform the School about what support would be most beneficial to our community.

We would like to formally thank those who have submitted assessments. We would also like to thank all who have engaged with the process for helping to create an environment where students feel respected, supported, safe, and valued.

To continue the initiative, we will be hosting hybrid syllabus review sessions on Thursday, October 31 from 12 – 1 pm and Tuesday, November 12 from 12 – 1 pm. Please click the link to register. These sessions are open to all—including those who have already submitted assessments and those who have not yet engaged with the process. New faculty are encouraged to join this session to learn more about the process.

If you have questions, please contact sphdi@bu.edu.
