Dear SPH Colleagues,

The Marketing and Communications Office is excited to highlight and offer new opportunities that spotlight the work you do towards our core purpose: Think. Teach. Do.

October 22 Workshop on Communicating Your Work

We invite all faculty and research staff to join our MarCom virtual workshop on November 4th to learn more about how the MarCom team can partner with you to elevate your work, including in the lay press and via SPH-owned communications channels.

Publicizing your Peer-Reviewed Publications and Studies

SPH publicizes peer-reviewed studies in which the corresponding author, lead author, and/or senior author are from SPH. We do this via press engagement, editorial coverage, social media, and more. There are some occasions in which we promote/cover studies that are co-authored by SPH faculty (i.e. major findings, joint release with other institutions, etc.), but the partnering institution will lead on media outreach.

Not every research piece lends itself to press outreach or editorial coverage. The MarCom team will be direct and honest with you if we do not think a press release is appropriate for your research. We make decisions about promotion of preprints, reports, and commentaries on a case-by-case basis—we prioritize editorial coverage for these types of publications if they are directly connected to a current event or topic in the news.

Please contact SPH Senior Writer and Editor Jillian McKoy (jpmckoy@bu.edu) about your manuscripts as early as possible—ideally, as soon as your paper is accepted by a journal. That will allow us time to discuss coverage opportunities, which may include an embargoed press release, media outreach, and/or social media plan prior to publication. We cannot guarantee robust coverage if we learn about your study less than two weeks before it is published.

Intrigued by the Idea of a Social Media Explainer Video?

Are you open to making a video for social media but don’t know where to start? Our Student Content Creators would love to partner with you—no dancing or self-recording required! Simply send an email to our Social Media Manager, Summer Kaeppel (skaeppel@bu.edu), to let us know if you’d be happy to help our students as they practice their real-world translation skills.

Self-Record a Short Video to Promote Your Course

All course instructors are able to self-record 2-5 minute videos promoting your courses for the BUSPH YouTube channel. This is an opportunity to highlight your course outside of the BU Course Bulletin which is managed by the Boston University’s central Registrar Office. We will promote your video via the GSL Student Weekly newsletter prior to students selecting their spring courses.

This invitation is strictly optional, and there are no technical requirements to participate: you could record yourself via an individual zoom meeting to include slides or simply use your cell phone camera. Please email Mike Saunders, Director of Editorial Content (msaunder@bu.edu), with your completed video to upload to YouTube.
