crystal-alvarez-headshotMPH student Crystal Alvarez was one of 27 health professionals and students awarded scholarships from the National Hispanic Health Foundation (NHHF) in December.

The scholarships were awarded at the 13th Annual Hispanic Health Professional Student Scholarship Gala, held at the New York Academy of Medicine in New York City on December 15, and at the 9th Annual Gala in Los Angeles on December 8.

The Health Professional Student Scholarships recognize academic excellence, leadership, and commitment to serving the Hispanic community.

Alvarez says she was honored to received the scholarship, and to meet so many “successful, inspiring, amazing Latinxs” at the gala.

“This award will help me realize my goal of conducting research on chronic and infectious diseases to further improve the health of the Latinx community,” she says. “I hope to get involved in a research project around underprivileged communities during my time at SPH, and this scholarship will allow me the leeway to find a project that fits my passion.”

The scholarship program is supported by the United Health Foundation, Centene, Humana, UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine, Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science, NYU Langone Medical Center, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, Emblem Health, AltaMed, National Hispanic Medical Association, and other partners.

The National Hispanic Health Foundation (NHHF), located at the New York Academy of Medicine and affiliated with NYU Wagner Graduate School of Public Service, is part of the National Hispanic Medical Association (NHMA), a Washington, DC-based nonprofit organization representing Hispanic physicians across the US.
