thumbnail-phxPopulation Health Exchange. Our name—just about—says it all.

The mission of the School of Public Health is to improve the health of populations through excellence and innovation in education, research, and service. In support of this mission, the school launched the Population Health Exchange (PHX), designed to meet the needs of a rapidly evolving world, reaching public health professionals where they are, and taking them where they want and need to be. PHX provides a central location for lifelong learning, where people can gain new knowledge and skills that strengthen professional development and contributions to the field of public health.

Our alumni are working in the local public sector, employed by large government agencies domestically and internationally, working in health care, pharmaceuticals, consulting, and more. We also have a growing network of friends of the school, from across sectors, who are also working to improve the health of populations. So, we designed PHX to offer readily available, flexible learning opportunities to our alumni, friends, and other professionals interested in developing new skills and competencies.

Policies and laws change, new technologies burst onto the scene, healthcare options evolve, and analytical tools and methods of communicating are constantly progressing and refreshing anew. As Dean Sandro Galea and Associate Dean for Education Lisa Sullivan laid out in their vision for public health education published in the Journal of Public Health Management and Practice, public health education is relevant, authentic, and practical; it is inclusive; and it is ongoing. Successful professionals need skills and knowledge developed and honed not just once, but over a lifetime.

For PHX to be most effective, we need to understand the public health knowledge, skills, and tools needed; develop content that meets the skill level of the individual and/or organization; and deliver an immersive learning program in the formats that meet people where they are.

We do this by delivering learning in multiple ways. Our current offerings include:

Learning Opportunities

  • Our annual Summer Institute of short programs brings people together for face-to-face training with SPH faculty, providing hands-on intensive learning as well as a community of peers for networking and professional growth.
  • Online non-credit programs, designed to build key competencies, offer asynchronous and synchronous options to meet both your schedule and your best-suited style of learning from a distance.
  • Webinars offer the opportunity to delve into a topic with one of our subject matter experts and ask questions in real time. You can also refer back to any past webinar.

Learn Anytime

  • Free Associations, our journal club podcast, brings together three distinguished, and humorous, SPH faculty to discuss best practices for reviewing journal articles. It’s informative, educational, and fun, and helps us to reach a global audience of more than 80 countries—and counting!
  • Our Practically Speaking video series lets you see our faculty do what they do best: combine rigorous research with effective, engaging teaching skills to bring you insights and actionable takeaways.

Explore Public Health

  • Population health topics like Data Visualization and Advocacy are included in this section, meant to provide an overview and point participants towards scholarly works and learning opportunities.

Custom Learning

  • Meeting you where you are means understanding your unique needs: custom content, specific timing, location, program delivery (e.g. in person, online, blended), etc. Our Custom Programs, specifically developed for your organization, provide flexibility so you can immerse yourself in building knowledge and skills in the most effective ways for you.

We are driven by our strong interest in providing flexible, immersive, and affordable learner-centered programs to alumni, friends, and individuals from across all sectors who want to  improve the health of populations. And, we want to hear from you. Reach out and let us know how we can work with you to deliver practical public health learning opportunities that meet your needs.

We hope you will visit PHX often to experience our offerings, watch us grow, and join our diverse community of participants on campus and/or online for our Summer Institute.

Leslie Tellalian is the director of lifelong learning.
