Charlie Card vs. CharlieTicket
Link, Local Bus, and Express Bus passes are issued on “CharlieCards” which are used for the whole semester (February 1, 2023 until May 31, 2023) and can be replaced if lost or stolen.
Commuter Rail Passes (including Zone 1A) are issued on “CharlieTickets” which must be picked up each month and cannot be replaced if lost or stolen.
Applying for a Student Semester Pass
To apply, go to the Transportation Management Portal, log in using your Boston University login name and Kerberos password, and then select “New Pass or Permit.”
Applications, cancellations, or refunds cannot be processed after the MBTA deadline (4pm EDT, August 10th).
Note: Students wishing to charge their student account must be registered full-time and in good standing to charge their account on the date of the deadline.

Is getting the Student Semester Pass right for me?
If you anticipate using MBTA services daily, then the Semester Pass program is probably right for you. The Semester Pass program offers an 11% discount off of the regular monthly “T” pass price.
Students who do not anticipate using the MBTA daily would do best with a “Charlie Card” – a reusable card you can add value to at any underground T station or online through a MyCharlie account (we recommend adding value online because CharlieCards that are managed online can be cancelled and replaced if lost or stolen). With a CharlieCard, a bus ride costs $1.70 and a subway ride costs $2.40. CharlieCards are available in various places including underground T stations and the Parking & Transportation Services office at 1019 Commonwealth Ave.

Note: CharlieCards issued for the Semester Pass program are only valid for the time period specified. DO NOT add a monthly pass or fare value to your CharlieCard as the card will expire when the program ends. Fall Semester Pass CharlieCards expire on December 31 and Spring Semester Pass CharlieCards expire on May 31. You must be an enrolled full-time student to charge the Semester Pass to your student account.
