Woodward Keynotes Law Day Commemoration Event
On May 1, 2023, John D. Woodward, Jr., a Professor of the Practice of International Relations at the Pardee School of Global Studies, was the featured speaker at the annual Law Day commemoration event hosted by the Virginia Mountain Valley Lawyers’ Alliance at Roanoke College in Salem, Virginia.
Woodward began his talk by discussing the foreign threats the United States faces, ranging from nation-states, like Russia, China, and Iran, to non-state actors like Al-Qaeda and other terrorist groups. He then explained the legal authority for surveillance and searches conducted by the U.S. Government for national security purposes. Much of his presentation focused on the requirements and processes specified in the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act of 1978 (FISA).
John D. Woodward, Jr. is a former Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) officer. During his twenty-year CIA career, John served as an operations officer in the Clandestine Service and as a technical intelligence officer in the Directorate of Science and Technology, with assignments in Washington D.C., East Asia, Africa, South Asia, and the Middle East. Additionally, he is an attorney and member of the Virginia State Bar. His publications include Biometrics: Identity Assurance in the Information Age (McGraw-Hill, 2003) and Army Biometric Applications: Identifying and Addressing Sociocultural Concerns (RAND, 2001).
