BUCSA, PWG Host Panel on Rising India, Rising Nationalism
The Center for the Study of Asia (BUCSA), an affiliated regional center of the Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University, and the Pardee Women’s Group (PWG) hosted an April 9, 2019 discussion on “Rising India, Rising Nationalism, and the National Elections.”
The panel featured T.V. Paul, James McGill Professor of International Relations in the Department of Political Science at McGill University; Alyssa Ayres, Senior Fellow for India, Pakistan and South Asia at the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR); Milan Vaishnav, Senior Fellow and Director of the South Asia Program at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. The discussion was moderated by Manjari Chatterjee Miller, Associate Professor of International Relations at the Pardee School.
Paul also spoke earlier in the day as part of the Pardee School Research Seminar Series on “Restraining Great Powers: Soft Balancing from Empires to the Global Era.”
Paul specializes and teaches courses in international relations, especially international security, regional security and South Asia. He is the author or editor of 18 books (all published through major university presses) and nearly 60 journal articles or book chapters. In September 2018, Paul became a Fellow (Elected) of the Royal Society of Canada. He was elected as the 56th President of International Studies Association and on March 17, 2016. As ISA president, he spearheaded the Global South Task Force whose report and recommendations were adopted by the ISA Governing Council in San Francisco in March 2018.
The Pardee School Research Seminar Series is a forum for faculty and students to discuss and receive feedback on ongoing research. The series is a mix of presentations, works-in-progress sessions, and research workshops. Faculty and students based at BU and elsewhere are invited to present and attend the Research Seminar Series. Anyone interested in presenting should send an e-mail with name, affiliation, and a presentation description, with “Pardee Seminar” in the subject line, to: Mahesh Karra.
The Center for the Study of Asia promotes comprehensive, interdisciplinary, and cross-national understanding of Asia through coordination of teaching missions, research support, community-building among faculty and students, and broad outreach beyond the university. It strives to be an intellectual hub for new ideas and cutting edge research in the humanities and social sciences.
The Pardee Women’s Group welcomes both undergraduate and graduate Pardee School students, but will focus on topics such as gender based discrimination in the classroom and work force, and will serve as a resource for students struggling with work-life balance and deciding what to do after leaving the Pardee School. Additionally, the Pardee Women’s Group promises to be a champion for socioeconomic inclusion and encourages all types of classroom diversity.
