African Studies Center Hosts Reception

The African Studies Center, an affiliated regional center of the Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University, hosted a reception for faculty, students and friends on Sept. 8.

“This is a fantastic turnout, and a wonderful chance for our new students and professors to get to know each other. We’re very pleased,” said Tim Longman, Director of the African Studies Center. “We have a lot to celebrate; we’re entering into the second year of our Title VI grant, and we have a number of exciting events coming up, including a large scholarly conference on African biography. Thanks to all who came out to visit.”

Longman said that 2015 was a record year for African Studies at BU, with more PhDs focusing on African issues than ever before.

“We’re so proud of the students that we are sending out into the world,” Longman said.

Founded in 1953, the African Studies Center has provided a strong foundation in African studies to generations of university professors, economists, health workers, government officials, development personnel, diplomats, and numerous others.

“I am having a great time,” said Daoudi Nadia Samia, a Fulbright scholar working with the African Studies Center on issues relating to architecture and climate change in the Sahara. “The African Studies Center is wonderful to work with. The people are so welcoming.”
