From political history and Latin America to defense systems in Europe, each of these courses offers new perspectives on the challenges of contemporary diplomacy, encouraging critical analysis and preparing students for advanced study and professional engagement in international relations.

CAS IR500 D1: Weapons & Wars in Europe
Taught by Chloë Mayoux
Outlining politics, history, and technologies around security and defense in Europe, this course emphasizes weapons procurement in the continent. Additionally, it takes a deeper look at the evolution of defense policymaking in the European Union, especially among key participating members, including France, Germany, and the United Kingdom.

CAS IR500 F1: The Politics of History and Historical Memory
Taught by Thomas Berger
This course explores the politics of history, underscoring topics such as the legacies of World War II and communism, war crime tribunals and truth commissions, reparations for war crimes and human rights violations, and how the past is commemorated in public spaces.

CAS IR537: Environment and Empire
Taught by Ben Goossen
A seminar course, “Environment and Empire,” examines the relationship between imperialism and the environment since early modernity. By taking a global approach, it reconsiders core themes in imperial history, such as the maritime conquest, settler colonialism, and resource extraction as part of the longue durée of human-caused environmental change.

In this class, students will unpack Latin America’s political integration since independence and critically examine arguments about how the region developed its own distinctive norms and approaches toward international relations and international law.

CAS IR700: Project Management
Taught by Tsitsi Musasike
In this hands-on course, students will gain a deep understanding of infrastructure project management. Ranging from policy to practical implementation, students will use live projects from economic infrastructure sectors, including energy, transport, or ICT. There will be a special focus on the role of government, the private sector, and financial institutions in successful project deliveries.
