Mako Speaks at Iraqi Research Leaders Forum
Professor Shamiran Mako participated in the Iraqi Research Leaders Forum in Baghdad, Iraq, which took place inside the Green Zone and the Presidential Palace from October 8, 2025 to October 11, 2025 . At the forum, Mako extensively spoke about Iraq’s foreign policy in a changing regional and global environment, offering a unique perspective to the Middle East’s diplomatic dialogue.

The event was attended by Iraq’s head of state, Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani. Other state dignitaries, including the Foreign Minister, the Head of Central Bank and the Speaker of Parliament were also present.

Shamiran Mako is an assistant professor of international relations and political science at the Pardee School of Global Studies. Her scholarship dives deep into the historical and contemporary drivers of inter- and intra-state conflicts that engender weak and fragile states across the Middle East and North Africa region. She is the author of the upcoming book Structuring Exclusion: Institutions, Grievances, and Ethnic State Capture in Iraq (Oxford University Press, 2025) and After the Uprisings: Progress and Stagnation in the Middle East and North Africa, with Valentine Moghadam (Cambridge University Press, 2021).
