Student Spotlight: Pardee’s Cole Hecker Takes the Floor at UNHRC Meeting

“Nothing short of unforgettable.” That’s how Pardee student Cole Hecker (IR’26) described his internship experience at UN Watch during his study abroad program in Geneva. His time in the Peace Capital became even more meaningful when he was selected to represent the NGO at the United Nations Human Rights Council meeting. There, he chose to raise awareness about the atrocities inflicted by North Korea alongside the Russian military in Ukraine.

“Delivering my speech to the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva was a transformative experience,” said Cole. “I had the rare opportunity to address the world on North Korea’s human rights violations. Facing rows of diplomats and global leaders, I emphasized the urgency of holding North Korea accountable under international law. Every word carried weight, and I felt the profound responsibility of using my voice on behalf of those who could not be heard.”

During his two-minute address, Cole was interrupted five times by the North Korean delegation, who objected to the language and content of his remarks. Yet, the young representative remained steadfast and completed his statement. He was supported by a Belgian representative, who emphasized the importance of Cole’s participation in the Human Rights Council’s deliberations.

In the speech’s conclusion, Cole called on the council “to launch an inquiry into DPRK’s role in the commission of war crimes in Ukraine.” Additionally, he said that this inquiry should include reports of member states that aid and abet North Korea’s abuse of human rights.
