Heine Releases a New Book About Active Non-Alignment (ANA)

On the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the Bandung Conference held in April, Professor Jorge Heine of the Pardee School released a new book, The Non-Aligned World: Striking Out in an Era of Great Power Competition. Co-written with Carlos Fortin, professor at University of Chile and Carlos Ominami, president of the Foro Permanente de Política Exterior, this book is a companion volume to Latin American Foreign Policies in the New World Order: The Active Non-Alignment Option, which was edited by the three authors.

The Non-Aligned World: Striking Out in an Era of Great Power Competition by Jorge Heine, Carlos Fortin, and Carlos Ominami. Published by Polity Press, the book is available in hardback and paperback editions.

This agenda-setting volume explores the return of non-alignment in recent times. As new global challenges and opportunities arise, including the conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza, and the diversification of BRICS, leaders across the world are adopting this diplomacy tactic in its evolved form — active non-alignment (ANA). For the Global South, ANA has been a tool to secure a favorable position in world politics and rapidly shed its reputation of being a passive actor.

With this book, authors delve deeper into the origins, dynamics, and relevance of ANA, asserting that this negotiation strategy in foreign policy is here for the long haul, even though it may seem to be a makeshift response stemming from the present-day circumstances. ANA, for the Global Majority, is a north star — empowering its African, Asian, and Latin American nations to recalibrate their diplomatic strategies to embrace a country-first approach while they weather international crises and uncertainty.
